Let’s face it, if you are reading this you have thought about or are thinking about or have already split your snowboard. There are not a lot of options for kits when you decide to split a snowboard for use as a splitboard. Inface other than the Voile Split Decision, we have only found the http://www.splitboardbindings.com/products/ Clips and a few others were the only parts we could find. The good news is that Voile split system is solid and has set an industry standard for others to compete against.
The Volie Split Decision Kit is a do it your self (DIY) kit for homemade splitbords, and specialty shops that specialize in splitting snowboards. The idea, get an old board lying around, simply cut it down the middle and attach the splitboard hardware and badda bing, you have your self access to millions of miles of snowboard acreage you have never experienced before.
Splitboarding is growing drastically over the past few years. As lift ticket prices climb, resorts get more crowded, there has to be a better way. The voile kit has to be the most popular way for snowboarders to access the back country.
At fist look, it looks like a bunch of screws and bolts. with some heavy equipment. There are many DIY Websites and YouTube videos where people walk through the steps of how to convert your snowboard into a split board. But we wanted to cover the quality of parts and effectiveness of splitting a snowboard with the Voile Split kit. After sawing your snowboard in half, you begin by using the templates included with the kit to determine the location of the hardware when attaching it to your snowboard. There is a huge intimidation factor that you must overcome as you will be drilling holes through your snowboard. A downside to the Split Decision Kit is that you only get one chance to get the placement right. Moving your stance around isn’t a very convenient option, and if it’s something you are interested in, you may want to look into a factory split board that includes placement bolt for changing stances around.
Another limitation we feel that home made split boards have over a factory split board is that the board seems to loose some of the rigidity. A factory split is built a bit stronger, including an inner metal edge, and a stiffer overall ski to compensate for the two halfs of a snowboard. However, the price of a home made split board is often more appealing to the DIYer in us.
The split board kit is universal, and can be used with any snowboard. It consist of the following parts:
- Nose and tail clips
- Mid board locking clips
- Binding Mounts
- Heel lift for climbing steep inclines
- Binding Base
- Binding Base Mounting Rod
- T-Bolts and screws for all the necessary hole to attach the hardware.
Our impression of the hardware is that it’s very strong and built to last for years. It’s an investment to split a board, and we are confident that the Split Board Kit will last as long as your board does. The T Bolts and other hardware didn’t show any signs of rusting or obsessive wear points. However, we have heard from a few people that the hinge where the binding plate rotates can get worn quickly. Voile has supposedly improved this design to reduce wear on the moving parts. Other Improvements include completely new Voile Split Kit Puck with 2-hole secure t-nut mounting, lighter Voile touring brackets, more durable rear tabs on the Voile Slider Track, new binding support riser for easier uphill skinning and side-hilling, and new durable plastic coated climbing wires.
